Walk Away From Foot and Ankle Pain This Summer!
Summer brings endless opportunities for outdoor fun, but it can also be the season when foot and ankle pain flares up due to increased physical activity or simply wearing the wrong shoes. Understanding and addressing these pains is key to enjoying your summer to the fullest.
Understanding Common Foot and Ankle Issues
Various conditions can lead to foot and ankle discomfort, including:
Plantar Fasciitis: This condition is most commonly described as pain at the bottom of the heel. It is usually worse in the morning or after sitting for a long time. The pain typically develops gradually and affects just one foot, though it can occur in both feet simultaneously.
Risk factors include:
• Overweight individuals
• Excessive standing
• Increased activity
• Flat feet or high arches

Ankle Sprains: Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that support the ankle stretch beyond their normal range and tear. This can happen due to a fall, a sudden twist, or a forceful impact that pushes the ankle out of its normal position. Symptoms include pain or difficulty bearing weight, swelling, bruising, and restricted range of motion.
Risk factors include:
- Sports activities
- Walking or running on uneven surfaces
- Wearing inappropriate footwear (i.e., high heels)
Achilles Tendinitis: This condition is characterized by pain or stiffness along the back of the leg or above the heel, particularly during or after running. It is thought to be caused by repetitive or intense strain, a sudden increase in physical activity, tight calf muscles, bone spurs in the heel area, or wearing high heels regularly.
Risk factors include:
- Age, particularly those in their 30s and 40s
- Men are more likely than women to develop Achilles tendinitis
- Physical activity and sports
- Previous injury
Understanding these conditions and their symptoms is crucial for early identification and treatment. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy for an assessment and treatment plan.

Prepare to Swim in the Water Safely
Swimming is a great way to stay active and cool as the weather warms up, but staying safe in and around the water is just as important as having fun. Before heading to the pool or beach this summer, review these simple swimming safety tips to help protect yourself and your loved ones.
Ensure A Lifeguard Is Present
Having a trained lifeguard nearby can help prevent serious injuries and ensure swimmers follow safe practices in the water.
Swim With A Buddy
Swimming with a friend keeps you safer, more accountable, and makes every trip to the pool or beach more enjoyable.
Never Leave A Child Unattended
Children should always have adult supervision around water and should be taught to ask permission before swimming.
Stay Hydrated
Even while swimming, the summer heat can quickly lead to dehydration, so drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Wear Waterproof Sunscreen
Protect your skin from harmful UV rays with a high-SPF waterproof sunscreen to reduce the risk of burns and skin damage.
